gobe: 4 pieces, 30x36” each, oil on board: Sidewalk Chalk Painting Series for children’s hospital
I was revisiting my own Tumblr archive and was feeling very proud of my younger self when I dwelled on these images. A hospital in Phoenix needed a large wall filled and asked a dozen artists to propose their work. They had a limited budget and a limited time frame. I pitched this idea after running out and drawing on the sidewalk for photo reference in front of my little rented apt. I got the weirdest looks from neighbors who saw no kids around me. One man said to his friend (audibly so I could hear), “Some people just can’t let it go.”
I won the proposal and in one month painted this series of oil paintings. Seeing them in the hospital, in the toddlers’ intensive care unit, a few months later, brought tears to my eyes. It’s not easy being an artist. And though most of the rewards are internal, they can feel really really big.
This is awesome.
